Enough with all this life-reflecting drivel. These cliches will drive me over the edge if I don't just get off my high horse and stop to smell the roses. Or tulips, as it were. Although I've been in more than one heated debate about whether or not tulips have a scent. All in the eye of the beholder/hair of the schnozz, I guess.
Just trying to make sense of life and--to some extent--my photography. Both are seen in somewhat raw form in my disorganized mess of Flickr pages.

On a clear day, you can see a very long way.
More thoughts on music.
One song that I listened to over and over and over again during the past several months is Colin Hay's "Waiting for My Real Life to Begin." I think the irony in not only the title but all the lyrics is totally his intent. He's not suggesting sitting powerless and waiting for and letting others/circumstances steer your course. I think he's recognizing those times that you ARE steering and you ARE on the path you need to take, but that path means difficult, painful choices-- and incredible patience and perseverance to endure the "wave crashing."
Not sure the lyrics alone translate the power of this song. Colin's voice and guitar do me in every time.
Waiting for My Real Life to Begin
Any minute now my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll stand on the bow
And feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down, down, down on me
And you said,"Be still, my love
Open up your heart
Let the light shine in"
Don't you understand?
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
When I awoke today suddenly nothing happened
But in my dreams I slew the dragon
And down this beaten path
And up this cobbled lane
I'm walking in my own footsteps once again
And you say,"Just be here now
Forget about the past
Your mask is wearing thin"
Let me throw one more dice
I know that I can win
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
Any minute now my ship is coming in
I'll keep checking the horizon
And I'll check my machine
There's sure to be that call
It's gonna happen soon, soon, oh so very soon
It's just that times are lean
And you say,"Be still, my love
Open up your heart
Let the light shine in"
Don't you understand?
I already have a plan
I'm waiting for my real life to begin
On a clear day
I can see, see for a long way
On a clear day
I can see, see a very long way

Daylight
I think we all have songlists for certain phases of our lives, whether organized that way on our iPods or just something we hear later that reminds of what we were going through at the time. Sometimes you just need background music and sometimes your music choice speaks exactly to what you want to say or maybe brings you down deeper into your psyche or, finally, gives you energy when you need it most.
Tonight's moving-out focus was a big, messy bathroom cupboard and I wished I had a playlist for "cleaning" or "energy" or whatever, because I needed something to get me going. Without such a playlist, I hit "Purchased" on my iPodTouch and then hit shuffle, which gave me songs I'd downloaded over the past year--many after hearing them on Pandora based on other choices. I wasn't really surprised about the maudlin pieces there (Nick Drake), but was particularly struck by the metaphorical and unabashedly dramatic need I had for pushing through and moving on. I don't care about the melodrama; just grateful for the energy many of those pieces have given me.
"Daylight" by Coldplay is a great example.
To my surprise, and my delight
I saw sunrise, I saw sunlight
I am nothing in the dark
And the clouds burst to show daylight
Ooh and the sun will shine
Yeah on this heart of mine
Ooh and I realise
Who cannot live without
Ooh come apart without
It
On a hill top, on a sky-rise
Like a first born child
At full tilt, and in full flight
Defeat darkness, breaking daylight
Ooh and the sun will shine
Yeah on this heart of mine
Ooh and I realise
Who cannot live without
Ooh come apart without
Daylight
Slowly breaking through the daylight

Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day
Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day--Jethro Tull
Meanwhile back in the year One --- when you belonged to no-one ---
you didn't stand a chance son, if your pants were undone.
`Cause you were bred for humanity and sold to society ---
one day you'll wake up in the Present Day ---
a million generations removed from expectations
of being who you really want to be.
Skating away ---
skating away ---
skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.
So as you push off from the shore,
won't you turn your head once more --- and make your peace with everyone?
For those who choose to stay,
will live just one more day ---
to do the things they should have done.
And as you cross the wilderness, spinning in your emptiness:
you feel you have to pray.
Looking for a sign
that the Universal Mind (!) has written you into the Passion Play.
Skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.
And as you cross the circle line, the ice-wall creaks behind ---
you're a rabbit on the run.
And the silver splinters fly in the corner of your eye ---
shining in the setting sun.
Well, do you ever get the feeling that the story's
too damn real and in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage, and it seems like
you're the only person sitting in the audience?
Skating away on the thin ice of the New Day.
